...1816... A famous June snow occurred in the northeastern U.S. Danville VT reported drifts of snow and sleet twenty inches deep. The Highlands were white all day, and flurries were observed as far south as Boston MA.

...1925... The high temperature reached 91 degrees at Newport, Rhode Island, breaking the record of 81 degrees set in 1899.

...1953... An F4 tornado near Arcadia, Nebraska killed 11 people, beginning a 3 day stretch of killer tornadoes that spread into the eastern U.S.

...1972... Richmond VA experienced its worst flood of record as rains from Hurricane Agnes pushed the water level at the city locks to a height of 36.5 feet, easily topping the previous record of thirty feet set in 1771.

...1974... At Newport, Rhode Island the barometric pressure rose of 30.35 inches, breaking the previous record of 30.25 set in 1950.

...1982... The wind gusted to 46 miles per hour at Newport, Rhode Island, breaking the record of 33 miles per hour set in 1976.

...1983... In Miami, Florida the overnight low temperature was a hot 80 degrees which set a new record for the highest minimum temperature at that location.

...1984... 42 tornadoes touched down in the Upper Midwest with 21 of them occurring in Iowa. An F4 tornado tracked 30 miles through Mahaska and Keokuk Counties in Iowa, killing 2 people and injuring 51. The small town of Wright was practically wiped out. Barneveld, Wisconsin was devastated shortly before midnight as an F5 tornado chewed up the town. 90 percent of the town was damaged or destroyed, 9 people were killed, and 197 were injured.

...1987... Thunderstorms in the Laramie Mountains of eastern Wyoming produced golf ball size hail, and up to five inches of rain in just one hour. Half a dozen cities in the Upper Mississippi Valley reported record high temperatures for the date, including La Crosse WI with a reading of 97 degrees. (

...1988... Snow whitened some of the mountains of northern California and northwestern Nevada. Twenty-six cities in the central and eastern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date, including Rapid City SD with a reading of 104 degrees, and Miles City MT with a high of 106 degrees.

...1989... Thunderstorms produced severe weather from southern Oklahoma and eastern Texas to northwestern Florida through the day and night. Thunderstorms spawned 22 tornadoes, including a dozen in Louisiana, and there were 119 reports of large hail and damaging winds. A strong (F-2) tornado at Gross Tete LA killed two persons, injured thirty others, and another strong (F-2) tornado injured 60 persons at Lobdell LA. Softball size hail was reported at Hillsboro TX.

...1995... The remnants of Hurricane Allison affected Newport, Rhode Island on this day, dumping 1.38 inches of rain and the barometric pressure dipped to 29.43 inches of mercury.

...1999... At Newport, Rhode Island the dew point rose to 72 degrees, it was later tied in 2008 and the heat index was a hot 94 degrees, breaking the record of 88 degrees set in 1984.

...2007... The low temperature fell to 45 degrees at Newport, Rhode Island, breaking the record of 46 degrees set in 1955 and 1958.

...2013... Two rainfall records were broken at Newport, Rhode Island on this day. 3.39 inches was the day total, breaking the record of 2.69 inches that was set in 2006 and .99 inches fell in one hour, breaking that record of .48 inches also set in 2006.
