...1898... Newport, Rhode Island recorded a snow depth of 24 inches, breaking the record of 12 inches set last year (1897).

...1917... Downtown Miami FL reported an all-time record low of 27 degrees.

...1947... The temperature at Tanacross AK plunged to a record 75 degrees below zero.

...1955... At Newport, Rhode Island the temperature fell to 3 degrees below zero, breaking the record of 1 degree set in 1917. The wind chill dipped to 22 degrees below zero, breaking that record of 4 degrees set in 1951.

...1961... Since January 20th, the daily low temperature at Albany, New York dropped to zero or below - 15 consecutive days -- a record for the location.

...1970... 1.81 inches of rain fell at Newport, Rhode Island, breaking the record of 1.32 inches set in 1939.

...1987... Wintry weather was confined to freezing drizzle and light snow in the northeastern U.S., and light rain and snow in the western U.S.

...1983... The barometric pressure dropped to 28.83 inches, breaking the record of 29.06 inches set in 1973.

...1988... Arctic air continued to invade the central U.S. The temperature at Midland TX plunged from a record high of 80 degrees to 37 degrees in just three hours. Morning lows in the higher elevations of Wyoming were as cold as 38 degrees below zero. Heavy snow blanketed southwestern Colorado, with 16 inches reported at Steamboat Springs.

...1989... A winter storm brought heavy snow and high winds to the western U.S. Up to three feet of snow blanketed the Sierra Nevada of California, and buried parts of northeastern Washington State under three feet of snow in five days. High winds across Washington State reached 75 mph, with gusts to 105 mph. Wisdom MT hit 53 degrees below zero. Missoula MT reported a wind chill reading of 85 degrees below zero.

...1990... Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced severe weather over the central Gulf coast states during the afternoon and evening hours. Thunderstorms spawned seven tornadoes in Alabama, including one which touched down north of Birmingham injuring fifteen people and causing nearly three million dollars damage. A tornado at Margaret injured eleven persons and caused a million dollars damage.

...1996... 6.1 inches of snow fell at Newport, Rhode Island, breaking the record of 3 inches set in 1951. Extremely cold temperatures persisted over the central U.S. Des Moines, Iowa dipped to 26 degrees below zero to tie its February low and broke its record for most consecutive hours below zero which ended up being 132 hours. Milwaukee, Wisconsin also tied its record for coldest February temperature with 26 below. Elizabeth, Illinois recorded 35 below, the state's second coldest temperature on record. The state record low was tied in Iowa with Elkader reporting a frigid 47 below zero.

...2006... Lubbock, Texas recorded its first measurable rain (.03 inches) in 98 days, ending its longest period on record without measurable precipitation.
